BAATN Gathering

Bilingual Practitioners’ Gathering

A forum for Black, African, Asian and Caribbean therapists and counsellors who work with clients in languages other than English.

Bi-monthly ⋅ Online

Outline

We are a group of therapists that offer therapy to Black and Asian people that have migrated to the UK from their country of origin, and whose main language is not English. Bilingual therapists work with clients using the familiar language of the client’s choosing. Working in this way enables clients to express deep emotional issues born out of separation from their birth home and inability to adequately express their thoughts and feelings in English about the discrimination, racism, bullying, unemployment, and isolation that leads to mental illness. As bilingual therapists, coming from the same country and or ethnic background as the client, we can relate to the issues our clients bring into therapy. Sharing the cultural background with the client facilitates the process of therapy. The client feels heard, understood, and held.

The group meets every two months to share our experiences and learn from each other.
