Legroom for Your Inner Child – Windrush & Indentured Children

Wednesdays from 29th November to 24th January 2024  7.00pm – 8.30pm

Outline

BAATN is pleased to announce; Legroom for your Inner Child.

If you were a child during the 1950’s, 60’s or 1970’s, the impact of racism during this time was powerful and extremely damaging in many ways. Many of us as children were told by parents that we should be ‘seen and not heard’, which left us holding all kinds of painful memories which many of us have not spoken about; in fact never spoken about. Well, it’s time for those experiences to be heard.

Why now?

Following our successful launch of BAATN’s Windrush 75 page on 1st October 2023, we’re pleased to announce we have created a follow-up space for those who would like to share their memories with other melanated people from this era, to come and do so from a place of acceptance and safety. The space will be held as a peer group forum, and over the course of 8 weeks, we will discuss the area’s many of us remember as children, but maybe never had the opportunity to openly talk about.

There will be some jokes, maybe some tears, but definitely people who want to hear what you have to say. Many attendee’s will be able to resonate with your journey, so come along, bring your inner child and allow them to swing their legs on the front room sofa of history with freedom to express themselves without restrictions. Video’s of experiences others have previously shared can be seen here.

What will it consist of?

This 8-week program provides a space for you to talk freely about the experiences many of us went through as children, and share those cultural nuances only others like us can relate to. You can pick and choose the sessions you’d like to attend. However, we would encourage you to book in advance, if you know you want to attend particular sessions.

How can this space be used?
This is a therapeutic space for melanated therapists and other healthcare professionals to finally take the opportunity they usually provide (hold) for their clients or patients and use it for themselves, to reflect on the overall theme of your chosen topic (see topic list below).

Who Can Attend the Training?
This peer-to-peer program is aimed at counsellors, therapists & other melanated helping professionals, who are of African, South Asian, or Caribbean heritage, who were either born in or were children during the 1950’s, 60’s or 1970’s.

  • The experiential nature of the program will require you to be willing to take part in sharing your memories in break out rooms, group discussions and use your own expressions as experiences to find connections, humour, and healing.
  • Your experiences of family, school, places of worship, neighbourhoods etc. provides you with all you need to attend this program. So simply bring yourself.
