Open Training Event
Immigrant Women and Gender Based Violence
A closer look at South Asian Women
Date: Tuesday 30th April 2024
Time: 6.00pm – 8.00pm
Venue: Online via Zoom
Outline
The workshop will focus on working with Immigrant women, with a specific focus on South Asian women and gender-based violence. The first goal of the presentation would be to show how socio-cultural factors influence violence towards women within the South Asian community. For example, definitions of violence might be different within the community.
The second goal of the presentation would be to present socio-cultural barriers that prevent South Asian women from seeking help. Such factors include familial and cultural values, gender roles, economic dependence, shame and stigma attached to sexuality and sexual violence, balancing two cultures and immigration status. It is imperative for mental health professionals to recognize these barriers and accordingly conceptualize and plan treatment. Furthermore, in light of these socio-cultural factors and barriers, implications to design culturally based interventions will be discussed.
