The Purge.

The Purge.  You know, the movie?  We are living it.
Anxiety, Stress and Fear is really here!
The Joy of the Oppressed.
Soul exhaustion, compassion fatigue, frozen – simply yearning to feel!
The 3 – 2 -1  Countdown; whilst the Earth’s crust is having a meltdown.
The skies are lighting up – is that the stars twinkling bright or bombs dropping out of someone’s sheer delight?

Happy New Year!  Where is the Peace for all things that are not happy?
Traitors, Trust – TV shows trending right now focusing on Betrayal, Lies and Foes.
Is this really how the New Year starts; so….
The Us, the We in Here – we see; the stories behind our eyes filled with fear.
A Cultural Collective is what we aim to achieve.

A moment of calm and internal Still is maybe what we need to start; align and still the mind.

Attacks, new revelations, knife crime, needing tools to assist with the overwhelm of the helper!  DANGER!  Black Women in Leadership BE CAREFUL!
There is a need to regroup as the racism mould is growing and we are inhaling…
We sit here, at the table, to break bread and eat today.
How do we support each other – let’s do it TODAY!
Shout out our articles, retreats, companies, graduations, businesses, recommendations, connections – let’s elevate one another; SURELY we are able!
Let’s start today.

The Purge. You know, the movie?  The fall is only for a short time, then life must continue.

When we feel lonely, it can often come with a sense of shame. It’s as if our loneliness were a personal weakness, and we’re embarrassed of our need for connection, belonging and being understood.

Loneliness is often amplified rather than lessened by the ‘hose reel’ content on social media.  We see our lives in comparison to those being played out in the alternative TikTok or ‘reel’ reality, putting a dent in our self-esteem.

Caught within a negative view of ourselves, we may feel that loneliness is actually an indication of our worth.  We might conclude that because we are lonely, we must be undesirable.  We must have little to contribute to social interaction, and so we withdraw.

It’s understandable not to want to be amongst friends when we’re not feeling our best.  In times like these, I need to be careful not to put up walls between myself and those I love.  Before therapy and having tools to navigate crippling loneliness, the walls I installed for my protection became my own self-imposed prison.

My experience has shown me that healing comes from social connection and shining a gentle light on the shame that wanted to keep me isolated.  I remember hearing someone say, “Our shame wants us locked in a darkroom developing our negatives”.  It made me laugh but resonated deeply.

When I feel lonely, I think about how I might respond to a friend who has just told me they feel alone.  I respond with empathy and then offer that same compassion to myself.  In doing so, something softens – a space is created for compassion to sit alongside the lonely feeling.  We can all practice this.  Ever so gently, we can allow our loneliness to be a companion on our terms.

Please scroll down to add your personal tributes and commemorative messages of Phil below.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our much-loved colleague, Dr Philip Cox, who passed away on 20th November 2023 after a series of illnesses.

Phil left school with few qualifications, but his intelligence, curiosity to learn, and determination to better himself enabled him to access an education that became his pathway out of a challenging life, culminating in completing a doctorate in counselling psychology in 2017.

Phil was a social activist, working with students and supporting marginalised groups and progressive projects, creating meaningful connections with BAATN, BACP, UKCP, Pink Therapy and many other organisations, expanding mutual learning. Phil was a founding member of the Psychotherapy and Counselling Union (PCU), founded in 2016, which was set up to stand up for therapists and the future of therapy. Phil’s special interest – unintended harm in psychotherapy, underpinned his support and advocacy for PCU members who faced fitness to practice and training issues. He brought a deep understanding of how the shadow can operate in destructive and self-sabotaging ways and the intersections of law, ethics and therapies. Phil’s philosophy was that by supporting therapists, we support clients.

Phil was eager and passionate to share his knowledge and expertise with the BAATN Complaints Group for the last two years. The Complaints Group was set up to support therapists and students of colour going through or considering a complaint. His contribution to the group’s work and knowledge has been invaluable, and his legacy will continue to have a huge impact into the future.

Phil was a courageous writer, researcher, and presenter, stretching the notions of traditional psychotherapies and often challenging us to think about our shadows and prejudices. His work in the field of complaints recently culminated in the chapter that he penned, ‘Uses, misuses and abuses of fitness to practice processes’ in Adah Sachs and Valerie Sinason’s book ‘The Psychotherapist and the Professional Complaint’. Phil also co-wrote the chapter, ‘The Psychotherapy and Counselling Union: Therapists Supporting Therapists through Complaints Processes – Emergent Learning and New Possibilities for Regulatory Change’.

Everything Phil did, he did with humility, a unique sense of humour and a strong drive toward social justice. His vibrant, engaging, emphatic personality shone throughout his work and relationships. Phil will be a huge loss to the counselling and psychotherapy community, BAATN and everyone who knew him. We send our condolences to his partner, Juliet Lyons, his friends and his family.

A celebration of Phil the man and his work will soon be announced.

Warm blessings

Eugene Ellis
