Outline

This is a series of six (6) fortnightly meetings (18 hours) where students will be prepared to bring their written work to share with one another. We will look at what makes a good essay using live examples to illustrate the importance of defining terms and concepts, referencing, structuring, connecting theory to practice, including the self of the counsellor/therapist. Reading materials will be suggested with the intention of complementing existing knowledge.

The workshop will provide opportunities for trainees to work together to explore issues relating to the written task. For example:

  • Structuring essays
  • Referencing
  • Applying theoretical concepts
  • Self-reflexivity
  • Use of self (including gender, race, religion, class etc.)

The group will be made up of a maximum of 8 students and will be interactive. We will work as a whole group for some of the time. At other times, the work will be done in pairs or groups of three.
