Our History

BAATN started as “Black and Asian Therapists Online” in 2003 with funding from an organisation called Unltd, an organisation that supports social entrepreneurs. At this point BAATN was an online register of black and Asian therapists. In 2006 the first conference took place and there have been yearly conferences since. On 29 June 2010 BAATN was registered as a not-for-profit company. At this point the need to support students into the profession became more apparent and the student support groups and eventually the mentoring project was established.

BAATN’s 20th Anniversary

BAATN has been running for 20 amazing years! We went from a humble online listing of Black and Asian therapists to a fully fledged network of therapists, students and allies who run events and trainings, host conferences and who presenting a wealth of online resources for the public around black and Asian mental health and wellbeing including blogs, podcasts and more.

BAATN’s operations team expands

BAATN’s operations team expands to include 8 members of (part-time) staff

2020
George Floyd Killed

On the evening of 25 May, George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man, was murdered in the U.S. city of Minneapolis by Derek Chauvin, a 44-year-old white police officer who knelt on his neck for almost 10 minutes. His murder was caught on camera by bystanders and sparked historic international protests across the world.

The first national Covid lockdown

On 23 March 2020, the UK Prime Minister announced the first national lockdown following the outbreak and international spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

Breonna Taylor is shot and killed

On 13 March, Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old African American woman and medical technician, was shot and killed by police in her Louisville, Kentucky apartment.

2016
BAATN changes it’s name again

The Black and Asian Therapists Network’ changed its name to ‘The Black, African and Asian Therapy Network. As well as the term Black in the network title, which is a political term, there was a need to respect and take into account a sense of place for Black people of both African and South Asian heritage, hence the addition of the word African. The word ‘therapist’ was changed to the word ‘therapy’ to emphasise an additional focus of BAATN’s work

2010
BAATN registered as a not-for-profit Social Enterprise

BAATN was registered as a not-for-profit company and the name was changed to The Black and Asian Therapists Network to reflect BAATN being more than a directory and that we were meeting and operating as a network.
