Gaia Therapy Collective

Gaia Therapy Collective, starting 2021

Gaia Therapy Collective is a community of therapists whose practice is deeply rooted in anti-racist, feminist, and ecological values. From 2018 to 2020 the former ‘Gaia Therapy Project’ provided affordable psychotherapy services to those in need, and laid the foundation for the Collective’s vision. We are now growing a new community of qualified psychotherapists in the early stages of their practice, and are looking for new members.

We aspire to cultivate a community and culture in which people feel welcome and able to explore the challenges of living. We are situated within Hackney City Farm, a diverse, ecologically-oriented community hub in the heart of East London. Hackney is an ethnically diverse and multi-cultural borough and Gaia Therapy Collective is committed to ensuring our therapists are representative of this diversity.

We welcome therapists who are committed to community-based therapies and are interested in exploring beyond traditional therapeutic parameters through both individual and peer-supported, collective modes of practice. We are especially interested in working with therapists who share these values and have experience or interest in community-based, eco-psychotherapy approaches. We encourage and support therapists to work outdoors as well as indoors, taking advantage of the unique physical and communal landscape Hackney City Farm provides. Alongside individual therapy, clients – should they wish – will be able to engage with opportunities already existing within the Hackney City Farm community, including yoga, meditation, and art classes as well as any therapeutic groups run by Gaia Therapy Collective. We recently ran a Therapeutic Gardening Group in collaboration with Hackney City Farm and are looking for therapists who are keen to develop further collaborative therapeutic projects that serve our local community.

How will it work?

Each therapist will be given a newly refurbished therapy room one day per week, usually available from 7am – 7pm, at no cost to the therapist. In exchange, we ask for 33% (2 clients minimum) of their private client work to be free / low cost for members of the local community.

It is hoped that all members of the Collective will utilise this free therapy room to explore creative, community based therapeutic practice and contribute to collaborative projects and ideas. It is expected that all members will create peer support opportunities, alongside attending meetings with Trustees and the Hackney City Farm community to further your work together.

Gaia Therapy Collective will continue the work of providing accessible, free / low-cost therapy to the local community. It will develop an ongoing peer support and internal referral system for therapists’ private practice. Hackney City Farm has kindly made a number of its larger group spaces available to the Collective for use when needed, to give opportunities for therapists to gather for peer support, and to develop therapeutic practice and projects. A free monthly supervision group via Zoom will be offered. Additionally, the Collective provides an opportunity for exploring and developing community based and eco-psychotherapeutic practice, welcoming creative ideas, and innovative practice.
