Workshop 4 – Teaching Counselling Post George Floyd Workshop
Robert Sookhan – Therapist, BAATN Advisory and Leadership Team member, Facilitator, Trainer
Workshop Outline
Since 2018, under the guidance of Dr Isha Mckenzie-Mavinga, Robert has been providing workshops/training within organisations that support their staff in developing skills about making a space ‘safe enough’ for dialogue about racism and how, within the context of therapy, professionals can work with their clients in terms of race and power issues associated with oppression and internalised oppression.
At the time of the murder of George Floyd in 2020, there was enormous interest in this work. This was also at the height of COVID-19 and the transition of delivering this work online. Opportunities and challenges of this time will be discussed and reflected on, with suggestions of how this work can continue in a ‘post covid’ environment.
Reflection and open discussion will also be given in light of the conference’s theme and what also may emerge.
Workshop 5 – Open Discussion Space
Workshop Outline
This open workshop is a space to come as you are and reflect on issues relevant to who turns up for the group.
