BAAT Network Conference 2010
This BAAT Network Conference took place on the 17th April 2010 in North London. The speakers were Harbrinder Dhillon Stevens , Senior Lecturer in Counselling & Psychotherapy and Director of DhillonStevens Ltd who explored the themes that arose out of her doctoral research entitled 'Healing Inside and Outside: An Examination of Dialogic Encounters in the Area of Anti-Oppressive Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy' (2004). Luke Daniels spoke about his new book 'Pulling the Punches - Defeating Domestic Violence'. Luke Daniels is a black counsellor and has many years international experience as a counsellor, trainer and consultant on issues related to domestic violence. Val Watson spoke about her research in ethnicity, race and culture as it relates to the counselling relationship and counsellor education and explored the impact of the black expert in the context of counselling.

Valerie Watson
Valerie Watson is a Person-centred therapist. She has been involved in education and training in secondary and higher education settings and in the voluntary sector. She has a personal and particular research interest in ethnicity, race and culture as it relates to the counselling relationship and counsellor education. Her completed thesis examined the training experiences of Black counsellors in England. Recently, Val has been exploring her interests in group work, community access to therapy in all its forms and learning from other therapeutic orientations. Currently, Valerie is a counsellor working in Higher education.
The Black Expert as a Catalyst
Using the context of counselling, Val's talk explored the impact of the black expert on her hosts and the ways in which her role as catalyst may offer challenges and a learning opportunity for all concerned. Conference participants will be invited to consider their own responses.
Pulling the Punches - Defeating Domestic Violence

Luke Daniels
Luke Daniels is a black counsellor with many years’ international experience as a counsellor, trainer and consultant on issues related to domestic violence. In this book "Pulling the Punches" he takes a refreshingly personal approach, sharing with honesty and poignancy much about his own background and struggles. He encourages perpetrators to take responsibility for their actions as a first step to conquering their abusive behaviour. Arguing for the liberation of both men and women, he discusses the effect of everyday socialization for violence, giving practical help for everyone affected so as to heal from past hurts, build better relationships with partners and children, and thus make a difference to ensuring a healthier society for all.

The BAAT Network Conference took place on the 16th February 2008 in North London. The speakers were Eugene Ellis (Founder of the BAAT Network), Lennox Thomas (consultant psychotherapist at the Refugee Therapy Centre), Bernadette Hawkes (Clinical Director of the Women's Therapy Centre ) and Kevin Brazant (Consultant in developing service provision for young men and fathers).

Eugene Ellis - Engaging Black and Asian people with thinking about their Mental Health in ways they have not done before
Eugene Ellis is an Integrative Arts Psychotherapist and the founder of ‘Black and Asian Therapists Network’ (BAAT Network). The BAAT Network is a network of therapists that seeks to reflect the many who are committed, passionate and actively engaged in addressing, the psychological needs of Black and Asian people in Britain. He has worked for many years as a child, adult and family therapist and currently works for Family Futures (an organisation that works with adopted and fostered children and their families) as well as working in private practice. Eugene has a special interest in facilitating a dialogue around race and culture in organisations and psychotherapy trainings.

Bernadette Hawkes – Gun crisis in the Black community- A legacy of separation, loss and broken attachments.
Bernadette Hawkes is a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and the Clinical Director of the Women's Therapy Centre . Her interests are in the areas of intercultural and forensic therapy and the use of African Caribbean literature in psychotherapy. She is the former Book Reviews Editor of the International Journal of Psychotherapy and has published several articles including Resilience, Suffering and Creativity: the Work of the Refugee Centre, Hearing the Unhearable, Speaking the Unspeakable: original wounds, trauma, and the asylum seeker.

Lennox Thomas - ‘Getting help; what do we have to loose’
Lennox Thomas trained in child and family psychotherapy the 1970’s before training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the BAP. His career began after training in Child Care, Child Development, working in a children’s home and later in a hospital with neonates and parents. It was at this stage that he became acquainted with the work of Donald Winnicott and John Bowlby and later attended seminars with Claire Winnicott. He worked in the Probation service for many years before working as Clinical Director of Nafsiyat the intercultural therapy centre. This post had academic connections with UCL and he was Co- Director of the UCL MSc in Intercultural Psychotherapy. He is now consultant psychotherapist at the Refugee Therapy Centre. He has a small private practice and is a Training therapist and supervisor. He continues to have an interest in early childhood development and the effect of separation and loss. To this end he is a member of the Separation and Reunion forum and his recent interest is the effect of attachment separation and loss on families who fled their homelands for asylum.
