Black Issues in the Therapeutic Process
These seminars are designed to enhance ALL therapy professionals’ understanding of black issues in the therapeutic process. Each day Dr Isha Mckenzie-Mavinga, a Transcultural, Integrative, Psychotherapist, Writer and Reiki Master, will include a seminar, discussion and experiential exercises to process and explore concepts and ideas that will support your client work as well as your work as a trainer where there is need for a dialogue around race. Participants will be encouraged to share their expertise and experiences that connect with the seminar themes. These workshops are based on Dr Mckenzie-Mavinga’s book ‘Black Issues in The Therapeutic Process.

28th April 2012 - A black Empathic Approach: Focuses on attending to the cultural context, developmental process and psychological impact of black issues.
12th May 2012 - Recognition Trauma: This concept takes into account the process of responses to powerful feelings evoked by discussions and experiences of racism. workshop notes 1 Workshop notes 2
26th May 2012 - The black western Archetype: A way of recognizing the evolution of stereotypes and their impact on unconscious processes and the internalization of racism.
9th June 2012 - Cultural Schizophrenia: Explores the impact of Eurocentric theory on the psychological processing of black issues. Workshop notes

About the presenter
Dr Isha Mckenzie-Mavinga has been teaching transcultural workshops at Goldsmiths for twenty years. She has a private practice and offers clinical supervision for individuals and groups. Isha is passionate about the inclusion of black issues in therapeutic understanding. She set up therapy services for the African Caribbean Mental Health Association in the early 90’s and developed therapeutic group work at Women’s Trust, with women impacted by domestic violence. She has also worked as a student counsellor and Senior Lecturer at London Metropolitan University. Isha published several papers from her Doctoral study about the process of understanding ‘black issues’ in counsellor training. She also co-authored an autobiography and contributed poetry to anthologies. Isha’s book ‘Black issues in the therapeutic Process’, Palgrave Macmillan Publishers was published in 2009.
